This beautiful little girl actually instigated this charcoal portrait. She begged her mother for it. Fascinated, her mother then embarked on a quest for the right artist. I was delighted when she relayed to me that several of her friends had recommended me. We then arranged for her daughter to come to my studio for the photoshoot—on her birthday—before her surprise dinner party. Her mother told me she likes to give her children memories. (How thoughtful!) I imagine this little girl will always remember her 8th birthday—at least when she views her portrait, she will! We had a lot of fun!

I love creating charcoal portraits. It is such a sensitive medium. And it has been used by artists since the days of the cavemen. My portraits are usually 11"x14" or 18"x24", which makes them very personal, not taking up a lot of wall space. And they are pennies on the dollar in price compared with oil portraits, if cost is a consideration.
