Grandchildren Oil Portraits Tradition Started by Grandmother

This is the first of 6 grandchildren oil portraits that a grandchildren oil portraits tradition started with a little boy sitting on a fencegrandmother commissioned me to do of all her grandchildren. At the same time she also had me paint a second painting, an exact copy, for the child’s mother and father. Of course, we didn’t know how many grandchildren there would be, at this point, but she wanted this to be the start. This little boy was almost 20 months old. When it was done and she came to my studio, I was delighted when she exclaimed: “Oh, sweet, sweet. His hair came out great. Look at those expressive eyes. It looks great. His hands are so cute. I can’t wait for them to see it. It looks just like my little bug. I love it—there is nothing not to love about it. It’s like he’s sitting right there on the fence with me.”

Then later when the mother of the little boy saw it, she phoned me from Colorado and also warmed my heart with these words: “You’ve really captured him. It’s so incredible. It made me cry. It turned out so well—it’s so beautiful—his hands, his face. My husband loves it too.”
