Charcoal Portrait of Newly Discovered Sister

charcoal portrait wedding couple

To receive a beautiful piece of art of yourselves
is a thrill without equal.

When Gregg commissioned me to do the charcoal portrait of his sister and new husband, he shared a dramatic family story with me: First, his English father and American mother lived in London with their son. Then, in the 1960s, father left them for another woman. Gregg’s mother brought her son to America. Gregg’s father remarried and had 2 more children. History repeated itself when he left his second family on their own too. In their struggle, they were helped by very famous neighbor and friend, the late Margaret Thatcher who later became Prime Minister of England. Then, many years after, Gregg’s half-sister contacted him with an invitation to attend her wedding to a fellow British ex-Patriot in Marbella, Spain. (I too have memories of the dazzle of this enchanting Spanish city of green palms, and shining white-washed houses against a blue, blue sky near Gibraltar.)

Gregg wrote me:
“I never had the chance to meet my sister and brother until her wedding last year. (We dropped the “half” part of “half-sister” immediately after we met!) My dilemma was, what gift could I give her? It finally came to me when they posted all their wedding pictures on Facebook. I would give them a charcoal portrait of their favorite wedding photo created by you. Thank you so much for the wonderful charcoal portrait you did of my sister’s wedding photo. They (and I) love it! Thank you again for the great job and care you put into this portrait!”

His sister also wrote me:
“It just arrived. OMG, it is absolutely amazing – we are both in tears !!!! Neil is speechless (thank you for the peace and quiet, lol). We can never thank you enough for this – it is beyond anything either of us has ever had or could ever imagine. We have an incredible framer here, (whom we trust) and we will be taking it to her first thing tomorrow. We are both beyond words – thank you, thank you, thank you xxxxxxx. ”
