CBS Program with Norman Rockwell's oil painting, "The Rookie"

I love hearing stories about my cousin Norman Rockwell from others. I thought you might enjoy this one about a favorite oil painting. It was sent to me from a client of mine who said I could share it with you.

“I came across my favorite oil painting by Norman Rockwell, ‘The Rookie.’ It was shown in 1957 on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post Magazine. You know how each one of his paintings struck a cord with the public? This one came very close to home for me. I even knew the old clubhouse shown in the painting.

Boston Red Sox Spring Training 1950s for Norman Rockwell Painting reference
You can see the club house just behind the bleachers where Norman Rockwell staged his painting, "The Rookie"

"That clubhouse was the home of the spring training locker room of the Boston Red Sox where Norman Rockwell made the reference photographs for his painting. I knew this because I grew up in Sarasota and played at Payne Park where the Red Sox trained every spring. In addition I had an uncle play with the Red Sox in the 50's. His name was Frank Quinn. [He was also the ace pitcher on the Yale team that won the College World Series in 1948. His first baseman was George Bush, 41st President!]

“Here’s a group photo of the Red Sox team at the time. There’s that same clubhouse in the background. Ted Williams, who is in Norman's portrait, is in the third row from the bottom, 4th player from the right. My uncle Frank is in the front row, third from the right.”

Isn't that wonderful?"
